New safety code for quad bikes coming

Following a series of recent quad bike accidents, a new draft code of conduct is being drawn up for their use in the workplace.

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and Distributors has been tasked with developing the new code, which will affect all businesses using the vehicle type. A timeframe for the new code has not been outlined.

Until the code has been developed, Comcare has issued a few safety tips, including that training be given at the point of sale. It has recommended Stephen Galls Ride Smart, Ride Safe program for Yamaha quads, and the H.A.R.T. program for Honda bikes.

Comcare has urged businesses to consider fitting bikes with Roll Over Protection Systems, and urges business to avoid loading vehicles beyond recommended capacities.

The Heads of Workplace Safety Authorities (HWSA) has also formed a working party aimed at identifying strategies to improve quad bike safety.
