Just Rewards

by J Wells

Allen & Unwin, 2004

$24.95

Reward and recognition are an integral part of HR management. How you reward employees, both tangibly and intangibly, have a substantial impact upon employee engagement and loyalty.

Just Rewards is a book that contains innovative ideas from Australian companies on rewarding staff and creating a happier, more productive workplace. It covers a considerable number of areas, including family friendly practices, health and fitness initiatives, cash bonuses and profit share, and community projects. The book contains a number of interesting case studies from organisations such as Diageo Australia, Merck Sharpe & Dohme, American Express, Retailink and Kool 4 Kats.

Importantly, Author Jamelle Wells recognises that reward and recognition goes well beyond the tangible, with chapters dedicated to professional and personal development, management style and special events. This is probably the most enlightening part of the book, with a good number of insights into how employees can best be rewarded without having to spend a fortune on formal programs; a simple ‘thank you’ from an immediate manager can often do much more than an extensive salary packaging initiative.
