Retaining Your Best Employees

Retaining Your Best Employees

by J Phillips & P Phillips

ASTD, 2003

US$49.95

This is the 28th book in the ‘in action’ series produced by the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD). As with previous editions, Retaining Your Best Employees uses the tried and tested formula of offering readers case studies of successful retention strategies implemented by companies across a diverse range of industries.

A total of nine companies are represented in this edition including Capital One with the elongated, but aptly named contribution, ‘Measuring the impact of an amenities center on attrition, attendance, and performance’– thankfully the text itself is only marginally longer than the title. Happy Airways shout at the reader with ‘Culture matters! Retaining employees and increasing profitability,’ but perhaps the best-titled case study is ‘Using an internal degree program to reduce the turnover of technical specialists: An ROI approach,’ by the Federal Information Agency – which doesn’t leave much to the imagination.

While all of the content is based on US experience, Retaining Your Best Employees provides a number of useful insights for Australian HR professionals. The book is actually quite easy to read, but a disappointing layout, extended titles and embellished graphs, charts, statistics and diagrams give this work a school textbook feel.
