Becoming an Employer of Choice

by J Leary-Joyce

CIPD, 2004

£ 24.99

Wander through the self-help section of any bookstore, or your own personal library, and you quickly see lots of how to topics such as how to lose five kilos in five weeks, how to be happy without a man/woman in your life, or how to be a winner all of the time and still be a nice person. Now walk over to the business section; there are many titles also with a ‘how to’ title.

The problem with such books is not so much the content, but the reader’s discipline and ability to execute the strategies found within the pages. However, this is no barrier to such titles being enormously successful – they allow us to dream a little after all. Becoming an Employer of Choice is the latest, albeit quite good, manifestation in this genre.

Utilising the UK Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For, the author researched what it was that these organisations did that made their employees love them. She then compiled those findings into 11 chapters, punctuated with break out boxes, self-diagnosis tests and summaries.

Now, HR practitioners, before you buy this book, commit to taking action as a consequence. It is available from www.cipd.co.uk/bookstore.
