The simplicity survival handbook

The simplicity survival handbook

by B Jensen

Palgrave Macmillan, 2003

$29.95

Have you ever wondered how much of what you do during your day is superfluous? Well Jensen has and he’s come up with 32 ways to cut down on the unnecessary things you do each day. So, by cutting out the surplus work you actually end up working less but doing more. Simple, as the author would say.

The book is effectively a toolkit to help you install shut-off valves in your workday to filter the information and demands that hurtle towards you everyday – from deleting surplus emails and dealing with bosses who ‘don’t understand’ to clarifying thoughts for more effective communications. But simplification does not mean that the essentials are eliminated – quite the opposite.

Jensen accepts not all the book will be immediately relevant to each reader so he recommends that readers do not go through it from cover to cover – just grab what you need. If all else fails he says, tear out the ‘Do-less toolkit’ at the back and throw the rest of the book away.

The book is full of enthusiasm, practical advice and is very readable. Grab a copy today and spend an enjoyable few hours reading – it may change your life. But remember, reading the book is simple, implementing the lessons and sticking to them is harder.
