Australian Council of Trade Unions
www.actu.asn.au
As the government has taken a harder role on unions and their numbers have been dropping, the ACTU site is a reflection of unions’ efforts to keep up with the times. Modeled on the NSW Labor council’s LaborNET site, the ACTU’s website is great as far as keeping browsers up to date with its latest activities.
The ACTU website provides a plethora of information, including union news, speeches and opinions, details of latest union campaigns across a broad variety of industries, predictions on the future of work and a library of resources for further information.
The website also details a good number of strategies that the ACTU has adopted in response to falling membership numbers in its policy section. This covers off congress policies, submissions, executive decisions and background papers, and sometimes borrows from lessons learned by unions overseas on how to bolster influence in a hostile legislative environment.
Considering the amount and detail of information on the ACTU’s website, it is remarkably well organised and quick to get around. Navigation is simple and user friendly, while design is practical and no frills. The website can assist organisations in increasing their awareness of specific industry areas, union initiatives and political actions.
