The HR Answer Book

The HR Answer Book

by S Smith & R Mazin

Amacom

$34.95

The HR Answer Book’s dust jacket claims that the book is an indispensable guide for managers and human resources professionals, providing expert advice on more than 280 topics.

However once you get inside the book, it quickly becomes evident that this book is not directed to HR professionals but to the legion of managers that have to deal with HR issues, such as business owners or executives, or managers looking for guidance.

While the information is clear and straightforward and therefore of use to people in all manner of companies, its content will be particularly salient to those operating in small- to medium-sized enterprises with no or a very small HR functions.

This book does not delve into abstract HR theories. Instead it focuses on concrete, practical and action-oriented information.

Divided into 10 broad categories, the book ventures into an employee’s entire lifecycle from attracting and selecting the best candidates through to the grisly task of firing an employee humanely.

The legal components are based on US law and therefore should not be relied upon, however the rest of the material is good common sense stuff.

The next time a co-worker asks you what HR’s about, throw them a copy of this book.
